The Case Foundation, Facebook Causes and PARADE Publications just launched the 2009 America’s Giving Challenge, a competition designed to raise both awareness and funds for charitable causes. From now through November 6, they’ll be giving away a total of $170,00 in prize money to participating U.S.-based 501(c)(3) charities who raise the most donations through the Causes application on Facebook, with daily and overall awards ranging from $500 to $50,000. What I find most interesting is that the Challenge…(read more)

Fundraiser vs Donor
The relationship between a fundraiser and a donor is a tricky kind of courtship, as Network for Good shows us — with a smile — in Fundraiser vs Donor . The Good, the Bad, and Missed Opportunities: a Fundraising Case Study
We know that it’s key for non-profits to connect online activities with real-world actions , but the reverse is also true, as a door-to-door fundraising campaign reminded me last week. Here’s the story: Two…(read more)

Should Your NonProfit Charge for Twitter Content?
Super Chirp , a service that lets Twitter users earn money from private “premium tweets” to paying subscribers launched yesterday. At first glance, it’s an interesting idea for non-profits with avid supporters who might be willing to “donate” for access to special content — but will Super Chirp fly? And if so, could it be a good fit for your non-profit? It’s been a couple years in the making, apparently, but Super Chirp is not an entirely new concept. Back in mid-April, TwitPub floated a very similar…(read more)
Small pebbles make big waves: 15 tips for fundraising on Twitter

PR Works Podcast: How Non-Profits Use Social Media
I’ve just been listening to a podcast of Lee Weinstein’s conversation with public relations consultant Donna Gibbs on how non-profits are successfully using social media right now, where Gibbs shines a light on the social media marketing activities — on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter — of two charities she’s involved with personally. The power of the Internet means that even smaller amounts by individuals can make a big difference because of (a) the sheer volume of givers and (b) tools that are readily…(read more)
When Rewarding Your Donors Can Backfire
Technology can make it much more convenient for people to follow through on pledges and donations, but what motivates donors to reach for their wallets or credit cards in the first place? What’s in it for your donors? Rewards for donation may be tangible (discounts, gifts, access to special events, etc. – anything that can be assigned a monetary value) or intangible (the good feeling that comes with doing good, for example, or fulfilling the need to contribute to a cause that has personal meaning);…(read more)
Better Non-Profit Websites to Increase Online Donations: Usability Report
In 2008, non-profits and charities collected about 10% of their donations online, according to a survey by Target Analytics, but usability expert Jakob Nielsen says the amount of money collected online could be much higher — with improved website design and content that answers the donors’ real questions.
