I’m a marketing junkie. And I’m a total nerd for association work. I’m also a bit of a techie. That’s quite a combo, right? Perfect for a SocialFish like me. The Association Marketing Springboard started in 2007 as a place for me to record my ideas and grow professionally. Over time, I realized that the biggest marketing opportunities out there are being enabled by technology…and most organizations are missing out! Today, the Springboard is a place for me to pass along the power of marketing techniques that integrate social technologies...and connect with some amazing people along the way.

Talking About the Word of Mouth Revolution

Best. Holiday. Gift. Ever. There it is. The little interview I did with Andy Sernovitz is this month’s cover story in Associations Now. I haven’t been this excited since Santa brought me my first Cabbage Patch Kid.

Special thanks to Andy for taking the time out of his crazy schedule to chat…

On Simplicity

Three quick thoughts on simplicity.

  1. I’ve been reflecting on something my friend Jeff De Cagna quotes often. “What is the simplest thing that could possibly work.” I dug up this old post from Jeff’s blog, Radical Simplicity. It’s worth reading again.

  2. Social web design expert, Joshua Porter, posted this week on Gall’s…

InfoComm’s Community enables new special interest groups

I’ve been emailing with Shana Rieger, the social media program manager at InfoComm International. Her story particularly interested me, considering my fascination with self-forming groups. She gave me permission to share this with you.

“We launched our site, InfoComm Community, in June 2008 at our tradeshow. We initially had three eGroups set-up for…

We have a group. Now what?

I’m a proponent for a new role for marketers. Part of that new role involves contributing to the work of community building. I’ve blogged about listening as the first step. If you’re listening well, you’re going to identify groups that are springing up around your industry, your association and the ideas…

Register for the School of SocialFish

When it comes to social media–from blogging and using Twitter to learning how to listen online and so much more–nothing can replace hands-on experience. But who has the time and patience to sit down at the computer and figure it all out through trial and error? (Trust me…it’s no fun.)

7 Steps to Useful Marketing Business Intelligence

A couple weeks ago, Maddie and I presented a session called New Rules for Engaging Young Professionals at the DMAW Association Day. It went really well, but enough about us.

I had the pleasure of attending a really great session that day. Wes Trochlil from Effective Database Management and Steve Doran, director of…

At one point, a very important question came up. To paraphrase…

Age is only a number. Generation is only a letter.

OK…that’s not entirely true. Generation could be several letters, depending on what you call it–X, Y, Z, V, Millenial, Boomer, Silent, Mature…not necessarily in that order.

Rohit Bhargava has a fabulous post entitled Why Only Stupid Marketers Use Age As A Demographic. He says, “Age doesn’t matter. What matters is relevance.”…

Maddie talks Twitter for associations

Check out Maddie’s fabulous interview with Amy Goodman from The Magazine Group’s Engage e-newsletter series.

My favorite quotes:

“Twitter is very useful for pushing out the contents of an association’s blog, for example, or for informing people about a publication that has just come out…”

“People do expect you to have a personal voice,…
