James and the Giant Jellyfish…

  And the jellyfish won!

With me busy writing my Lazy Leader book, James decided to compete in a 5K open water swim.

  • The morning was beautiful.
  • The water calm.
  • The sand like white diamonds.

It was a great day for a race!

  • James arrived on time.
  • Met some neat people.
  • Got off to a strong start.

And then came the jellyfish…

  • James had his head out of the water to see where he was.
  • And stuck his arm right by a jellyfish!
  • Strands like spaghetti tapped James’ arm.

And the pain began.

  • James stopped swimming.
  • Whipped off his swim cap.
  • And help came - just as more jellyfish approached.

The lifeguard hauled James on his jet ski.

The local swim team pulled together to help James recover.

  • He was doused in vinegar.
  • Offered a daiquiri.
  • And awarded third place for his age group!

(Check out James’ award and jellyfish arm in the photo.)

The morning was not totally lost…

  • James joined the gang for breakfast.
  • Enjoyed meeting more people.
  • And hopes to race again next year!

Makes me think of chapter leaders…how do you respond when circumstances beyond your control impact your members’ experience?
